WHO I AM

I was born in the French speaking part of Switzerland and started learning the classical guitar at age 9. Later on I entered the Music Conservatory of Geneva but didn't complete my studies, having opted to join my parents on their migration to New Zealand.  Since then, I have gained a Classical Guitar Grade 8, with Distinction, and a Performance Certificate in singing.  I have been teaching classical guitar full time for the last 15 years.

I have been a member of the New Plymouth Classical Guitar Society since 2003 and am now the president.

I am part of a two guitar duo called 'Guitarra' (www.wix.com/guitarrataranaki/guitarra), which performs regularly, for private and public functions.  I also perform solo.

In addition to private teaching, I conduct a  guitar orchestra, 'Con Tempo', and this year am starting a NZ wide guitar orchestra for talented students of grade 4 and above, and under the age of 18 - the New Zealand Youth Guitar Orchestra (NZYGO).

In 2011, I initiated the inaugural Taranaki Classical Guitar Summer School (TCGSS), www.taranakisummerschool.com

The first event was held in 2012, and was a resounding success. Featuring some of the world's finest classical guitarists, this event brings together educators, students, professionals, amateurs, composers and luthiers, to New Plymouth for six days and nights of intense, fun and rewarding learning and guitar playing. I now coordinate this biennial festival. The second was held in January 2014, and plans for the 2016 event are already well underway.

My thorough method of teaching builds a strong foundation which prepares the student for the higher grade.  Topics covered during the lessons include musicianship, musical knowledge, how to practice, music reading, theory.   The students develop their playing skills by exploring a wide variety of music, discovering the versatility of the classical guitar with solo and ensemble playing;  ensemble playing is one of the best ways to improve musical skills such as keeping rhythm, playing without stopping, listening to others while concentrating on a part and making new friends!

Students may want to learn for the sheer enjoyment of it all, but for those who wish to, participation to exams, regional competitions, and regular performances are all available.
